The Architecture of Language-From Cognitive Modelling to Brain Mapping and Back

"The Architecture of Language" is an international conference focussing on the brain aspects of language functioning. The aim of the meeting is to rethink the global architecture of language by combining data from functional exploration of the brain with proposals from the linguistic and cognitive science, thus favouring the interdisciplinary dialog. It will be held at Scuola Normale Superiore & University of Pisa, Italy, June 8-10,
2006. More info here.

Robot Demonstrates Self-Awareness

According to this Discovery Channel News article, "A new robot can recognize the difference between a mirror image of itself and another robot that looks just like it.

This so-called mirror image cognition is based on artificial nerve cell groups built into the robot's computer brain that give it the ability to recognize itself and acknowledge others.

The ground-breaking technology could eventually lead to robots able to express emotions."

There is Slashdot discussion here.
